When you think of walls you typically think of Drywall, the ubiquitous materials used to build walls in the modern world. It's readily available, low cost and easy to finish, but it's permanent, labor intensive and not very flexible. If you have a space and need some walls to add privacy or rooms which approach is better?....So in this head to head challenge let's see how they stack up!

Ground Rules: We'll assume you have an open space(studio, loft or office space), and need to partition off 3 areas for room or offices. You want to build two 8' wide walls to create 3 areas.

It's obvious that from a hard cost perspective Drywall is hard to beat, but if you factor in labor cost to build the wall or want flexibility down the road, LOFTwall has a lot of upside for flexibility, modular design and mobility.

Christmas came a couple weeks early for our family with an 8 week old Black Lab puppy named Mica, we already had a 5 year old Black Lab. We borrowed a "wire" pen enclosure to give the puppy a play area, but a couple days later, the puppy's rear paw became caught in the wire wall of the pen, injuring the puppy. We weren't real sure what to do about the a pen.
Trent, my oldest son(7) said we should build a LOFTwall pen for the dog. So a few hours later we had put together a 4'x4' pen using the frame and panel elements. We included a clear acrylic window on the front to led the puppy and smaller childern see in. I was very surprised how well it has worked and many of our neighbors and friends think there may be a future for the DOGwall. What do you think?

We recently created privacy screens for a health club looking to add privacy to some of their areas and create visual barriers in their space.

Health clubs are a great place to get your working out, but maintaining your personal privacy while you workout can be a challenge and sometimes uncomfortable, creating a distraction to your purpose.

"I am constantly annoyed by the men and woman who stare at me when I am working out. "

"no matter if they’re running behind you on a treadmill or pumpin’ weights near you as you stretch – the staring and gawking is gross."

"it's annoying...people tend to stare at me in the gym, when im walking by, or just going to do my exercises."

Health clubs and gyms should consider creating visual barriers to create privacy for their patrons, adding privacy screens can allow them to create area's specific to stretching, yoga and group exercise classes.

If you came by the display at Dwell on Design last week you saw a new DIY(design it yourself) project panel that we did with some cool contemporary wall covering from ROLLOUT. We first met Jonathan and Anita, Rollouts Owners, at ICFF and were very impressed with their contemporary designed wall coverings, they were thoughtful and well designed and not over the top. We really wanted to do a sample wall with them them that complimented our overall design and range of materials. I found them to be very easy to work with and they were even able to customize the color range and scale, to get the sizing just right and proportional to our dividers.
They even work with LA based artist David Palmer and other surface designers. Check out the new Wayfinder Wallpaper by Mike & Maaike!

Divide and Conquer: LOFTwall

Making a colorful statement at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC this month is LOFTwall, the two-year-old Dallas manufacturing company of mod divider partitions that separate the functional from the fabulous. Steven Kinder, a Dallas resident and Rhode Island School of Design grad, had his light-bulb moment after years of loft living. His screens are low-profile (unlike traditional folding screens) and customizable. Clip-on panels in dozens of looks can be changed out with the décor, or create your own with adhesive panels for applying fabrics or wallpaper. The aluminum frame comes in 40 finishes and colors and is made from recycled cans and industrial scrap.

To start 2010 I wanted to share a recent testimonial from a customer. Hope lives on the upper east side of Manhattan/NYC, her 460 sq.ft living space is typical of a small space where LOFTwall can make a dramatic difference. Hope was looking for a divider to separate her sleeping and living areas.

Our back office mini-shrine to the work of Shepard Fairey. I met Shep at RISD in the early '90's and participated in his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker/manifesto campaign. More recently he was asked to create the Obama Hope imagery for the 2008 Presidental Campaign of Barack Obama. Visit OBEYGIANT to follow his blog or purchase some of his work.The OBEYwall was created using the free downloadable sticker file from his site.We printed the sticker on large format printer and mounted it to our DIY self-adhesive board.

Team LOFTwall Rides Paluxy Pedal

On Saturday October 3rd, 10 riders weathered the rain to ride the 7th annual Paluxy Pedal in Glen Rose Texas. Team LOFTwall had a great showing with everyone conquering "the WALL" and finishing the race.

Members of Team LOFTwall will be riding in several charity and triathlon events this fall. The next ride will be the Mamma Jamma Ride Against Breast Cancer on October 10th in Austin Tx.

Bathroom Divider Screen

Kudos to the Lundys of Pennsylvania for sending us this photo of their LOFTwall divider as a bath shower divider. We first met them at ICFF and they inquired about using it as a divider between their open shower area and vanity/counter space. They wanted clear plex on the top and frosted on the bottom panels. Looks like it was a success and we are happy to say it's the first instance we have seen of LOFTwall being used in a bath or shower.

Still catching up since returning from ICFF and reflecting on the array of interesting designers and trends. First, I want to say thanks to all the visitors to our stand, we were overwhelmed with the positive feedback from many of you about LOFTwall and look forward to working with many of you in the future. Here are some interesting things from ICFF.Some annual attendees thought this years ICFF was a little tired, others just fell asleep on some of the high end pieces.

Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce showcased up & coming designers, nice adaptive reuse, found objects and materials.

Tom Larimore's recycled timber pieces, simple forms with angular elements and a high level of finish.

Tips to create your own LW divider

One of the great things about LOFTwall is the ability to create or update the divider with your own ideas, whether it is with the range of materials we offer from our site, or if you experiment with your own ideas. It can be a challenging task to start on, after designing about 100 unique designs I wanted to offer up a few simple suggestions to help you get started, once you have a few under your belt, you will get a feel for what works or doesn't.

1. Mix opaque and translucent infills- depending on the space for your divider, mixing opaque and translucent can offer you a unique look, the translucent panels will allow light to transmit and often absorb some of the colors already in the space from furniture or painted wall. It also creates a dimensional effect.

2. Play with 2-3 textures or surface finishes, this can be as easy as mixing the materials, like wood with frosted plex and fabric, but be careful that your wood or fabric textures compliment each other. Try not to have more that 1 dominant texture, like colors that clash, textures can clash too....let the wood of fabric material dominate and use more subdued materials or finishes that compliment the dominant texture.

3. Be careful of patterns, some patterns can really make LW pop, but too much of a good thing can kill a design, so keep it simple and find something that work but use it sparingly.

4. Open up the frame, you don't have to fill every square inch, on the wider 6' and 8' versions leaving an opening or two without a panel can create a real play on the positive and negative space opening.

5. Add a printed graphic- this too can add focus to a space or work environment, if your company makes jewelry, adding some detail product shots in a few openings instantly brand LW as a unique element in your workspace, any large format printer can print on a 1/8" substrate, put 2 back to back and you have a double sided image-

Design it Yourself Panels

We are excited to announce that we have completed our testing on our new DIY self adhesive infill panel. It isn't as complex as it sounds, it is actually very simple solution to let anyone create their own unique infill panel for LOFTwall with any kind of roll(fabric) or paper material(wall coverings). We have spent the last few months working out the glitches to create a rigid board that has a self-adhesive peel away liner on both sides to make it easy to mount your own material too.

What is the advantage of this? there are a few significant reasons I wanted to develop this and make it available.

1. Easy of use -In about 10-20 mins. you can create your own fabric covered panels without the hassle of adhesives or glue, simply source your cover material, cut it a little oversize of the panel, peel the liner from the face of the board, and adhere your fabric, then trim the edges.

2. it is a very "green" solution to using aerosol adhesives that release harmful VOC's into the environment, plus if you have ever used Super 77 spray mount, it gets residue all over your work area, clothing and skin, just image what you breath in too.....

As part of our first time to show at ICFF next month, we wanted to create a small video to show the LOFTwall divider, it also happens to be one of our new 6' wide versions. Inspired by loft living

The inital concept for LOFTwall™ came to me about 10 years ago while living in a small loft space in dallas. I had lived in small spaces before, while in college several of us shared a small house and we made use of traditional shoji style screens, the 3 panel versions. They seemed to work fine but always had a larger foot print to allow the unit to stand up and you couldn't make them a complete straight wall/screen(or they would fall over). My experience in dallas lofts was what let me to see the need for a low profile, modern designed divider wall that could be customized to suit a variety of interior styles.

Many of the loft spaces in dallas(and other newer converted buildings) can be pretty bare, an open room with a kitchen in one corner, a bathroom monument, and the rest of the space was pretty open, with maybe a building column oddly located in the space(see previous post for a typical floorplan)...it became evident that upon entering the space, you could see everything form the doorway, which isn't very private or formal. One of my friends who lived in the same building, had devised a system of rods and panels to build a visual barrier to section off his sleeping quarters, from the rest of his space, it was a challenge because you were not allowed under the lease to attached or create permanent walls in the space.

From these experiences, I wanted to create a divider that would allow for a variety of ways to use it and to modify its aesthetic design to work in almost any space, or as your design influences change you can can change it. With a family of materials you can use translucent panels that allow light to transmit into the space, or opaque if you want less light in the divided area.

Enhancing small spaces with room dividers

It's great to live in the heart of a city like Chicago, New York or Boston, there is so much culture, history, restaurants and things to do. The major trade-off is that your living space may be on the small side. It's typical in metropolitan or urban areas that live-in lofts will be one large room or space, either due to the age of the building or the way the floor plan was created when the building was converted from industrial use. This open space is great but can be a challenge to live in once you occupy the space. If your like me, your collection of living elements(furniture, odd things) can become overwhelming in one open space. It is our human nature to segment space for living, whether the space is for sleeping, relaxation or working. We want to surround ourselves in an environment that is conducive to a particular activity, not to mention if you have a roommate or significant other that needs their personal space.
Free standing room dividers are an great solution to address many of these concerns. Most are lightweight and easy to move and reposition as you need to in your space, they can provide privacy to a bedroom area or personal space, hide that cluttered corner of your loft with the unpacked boxes. Whatever the reason, a room divider is a must for living in a loft or open space.

We will be showing some great new features, designs and new materials for loftwall.ICFF is a premier contemporaty furniture expo for all kinda of contemporary and modern furnishings, materials and designed objects. My first experience at ICFF was in design school, we traveled as a class to NYC for our furniture design class field trip. It was eye opening to see such a spectrum of design aesthetics and use of materials. Many of the inspiring designs resonated with me personally as a design student to explore non-conventional materials and thought processes behind the creation of an object or furniture piece. I was also impressed by the use of traditional manufacturing processes adapted to add a unique quality to the design of a piece.
ICFF is a great place to really see the spectrum of ideas and trends in contemporary design.

Hey! welcome to the LOFTwall Blog, we are just breaking ground here-I'm Steve, creator and founder of Loftwall. I am creating this as a way to provide information and insight to our unique open living divider solution, and provide some of my own personal thoughts about our modern world.

As a small business owner & entrepreneur, I want to be a source of knowledge to others about following your own dreams or ideas to enhance the world we live in. I am a design junkie with a arts education from RISD, and have spent the last 10 years trying to enhance the world through helping companies create, promote and market their products. LOFTwall is my baby, that I believe can change the way we live and work in open spaces.
